7. Captain Giedrius’ Stories

Sailing Seasons – The Changing Face of the Sea

Oct. 6, 2025

The sea is like a living organism. It changes with the seasons – its moods, its colors, and the way we experience it. That’s why when planning a sailing trip, it’s not only the route that matters, but also the time of year.

Spring – The Season of Renewal

According to Giedrius, spring is when the sea awakens from winter’s stillness.
“Everything is still fairly empty – few boats, quiet green shores. The temperature is mild, not too hot, but pleasant,” he says.
Spring trips are perfect for those who want slower days, fewer tourists, and more authentic impressions. The sea may be cooler, but the air is fresh, and the first warm days make every anchorage feel special.

Summer – The Season of Energy

Summer is high season for sailing. The Mediterranean is alive with activity – but also with challenges.
“The warmth is wonderful, but there are more people. Harbors are crowded, and you often need to secure a berth earlier,” explains Giedrius.
Summer brings it all: sunshine, swimming in hidden coves, long dinners under the open sky, and unexpected adventures. But it also calls for compromise – sometimes changing the route to avoid crowded places, sometimes sharing an anchorage with strangers who soon become friends. These are the trips filled with laughter until late at night, and memories that last for years.

Autumn – The Season of Calm and Maturity

“Autumn is my favorite,” admits Giedrius. By then, the sea is quieter, the crowds have thinned, but the water is still warm.
“Nature slows down, there are fewer people, but the days are still beautiful.”
Autumn sailing offers a calmer rhythm, relaxed travelers, and a chance to focus more on the people with you – or on yourself. It’s a season of peace, reflection, and deeper experiences.

Winter – Time for Distant Shores

When Europe cools and Mediterranean sailing becomes less reliable with unpredictable winds, Giedrius recommends heading further afield. That’s when the season opens in the Caribbean, Thailand, or Polynesia – regions blessed with warm weather, calm seas, and breathtaking scenery during Europe’s winter.

  • Polynesia. A true sanctuary of nature, with few people, extraordinary tranquility, and colors beyond imagination.
  • Thailand. Warm, exotic, and welcoming, with vibrant reefs, colorful marine life, and the unique kindness of Thai hospitality.
  • Caribbean. Like a living postcard – white sand beaches, clear water, and an unhurried pace of life.

These destinations allow you to extend your sailing season into the colder months. But as Giedrius reminds, preparation is key: pay attention to seasonal changes (rainy or storm periods), choose an experienced skipper, and be ready for long flights and new cultures. With good planning, such trips are not just holidays, but life-changing experiences.

The Baltic – A Different Character

Giedrius has also sailed the Baltic and notes its unique nature.
“It’s less predictable, often windy, and comfort depends a lot on the weather.”
Frequent waves and stronger winds make it less suitable for a carefree holiday. That’s why, for those wanting to try sailing in Lithuania, he recommends the Curonian Lagoon. Safe and interesting, it’s a perfect option for a first experience or even a one-day trip.
