2. Captain Giedrius’ Stories

The Storm That Taught Respect for Nature and Life

Oct. 5, 2025

During a challenging voyage from Italy to Spain, Captain Giedrius and his crew faced a fierce Mediterranean storm.
What began as fear became a powerful lesson in teamwork, humility, and respect for the sea – one that shaped him as both a sailor and a person.

A storm at sea is more than just a battle with the elements – it’s also an inner turning point, when the outside world merges with your own emotions, fear, and trust. For Captain Giedrius, it was one of the most powerful experiences of his sailing life – a moment that left a deep mark and changed the way he viewed nature, teamwork, and himself.

The Beginning of the Journey

The story began when a group of colleagues set out from Livorno, Italy, bound for the Spanish island of Mallorca. At first, the Mediterranean seemed calm, though forecasts had hinted at unstable winds. Nobody expected a real storm. Yet it struck suddenly, right in the middle of the crossing.

“Wave after wave kept rolling in, and there we were – nine people on board – each dealing with the situation in our own way. From cold sweat to calm silence, from fear to teamwork – in that moment, we became one crew,” recalls Giedrius.

Fighting the Elements

The boat had to be steered with absolute precision. One wrong course could mean disaster – turning the bow into the waves, violent rolling, or even capsizing. At that point, the captain’s role was not only to hold the helm, but also to hold the crew’s emotions together.

“There was a shared sense of responsibility. If you panic, you lose. You have to stay calm, because other people’s safety depends on your decisions,” says Giedrius.

During the storm, the raw power of nature became undeniable – almighty, unpredictable, and demanding respect. “That was the moment I understood: at sea, humans are guests, not masters,” he adds. The experience taught him more than sailing skills – it offered life lessons: when to fight, when to yield, when to stay silent, and when to speak.

Lessons for the Crew

After several exhausting hours, the crew was physically drained but spiritually stronger. For many, it became a turning point – a shared lesson in teamwork, respect for nature, and knowing their own limits. Out of the nine who sailed that day, only one later said it wasn’t for them. The rest still sail today, remembering that storm with a smile as a life-changing moment.

The storm was like a symbolic baptism at sea – one that shaped Giedrius as a captain. He learned to read people more clearly, anticipate emotions, and address problems before they escalated. It also deepened his respect for preparation – both technical (the boat’s condition, weather analysis) and psychological (crew experience, expectations).

Why Experience Matters

When speaking about safety, Giedrius also recalls other incidents shared in the sailing community. These were not his own experiences, but cautionary tales that show how even the smallest mistakes at sea can lead to tragedy. Sometimes it was as simple as an unprepared boat, ignored forecasts, or misplaced trust in an inexperienced skipper.

“One of the saddest stories I’ve heard happened close to shore – people lost their lives because the boat wasn’t controlled and no help was called in time. They could have been saved,” says Giedrius. Such stories are a reminder: at sea there is no room for chance. Only clear decisions and reliable leadership keep people safe.

The Sea Is Not Just Postcards

Giedrius’ story proves that even the most difficult moments can become the greatest teachers. The sea doesn’t only teach you how to sail – it teaches you how to live differently. With greater respect for nature, more sensitivity toward others, and deeper trust in yourself.

Life at sea isn’t just about picturesque sails and romantic sunsets. Sometimes it reveals its other face – fierce, intimidating, and demanding focus, knowledge, and leadership. That’s why the professionalism and experience of a captain are so vital.

And those are the moments that stay in memory the longest. The ones that make you reflect on nature, on yourself, and on what truly matters.
