Yacht Charter FAQ: Answers to the Most Common Questions

April 21, 2026

For many people, yacht charter seems like something reserved for experienced sailors or those with deep pockets. But the reality is quite different. Every year, more and more people set sail on a chartered yacht for the first time - families, groups of friends, couples - and come back saying it was the best holiday of their lives.

To help you understand how it all works, we've gathered the most frequently asked questions and answered them honestly and simply. Read on, ask away, and - who knows - maybe start planning your first yacht charter adventure. 🙂

How does yacht charter work with Travel Boat?

Travel Boat is a yacht charter intermediary, which means we handpick the best offers from trusted boat owners and charter companies around the world. You don't need to browse dozens of websites and compare options yourself - simply tell us where you want to sail, when, and how many people you'll be, and we'll find the perfect yacht for you.

How much does a yacht charter cost?

The price depends on several factors: the type and size of the yacht, destination, season and duration. As a general guide, weekly prices start from a few hundred euros per person when travelling as a group. For an exact quote, simply send us an enquiry - we will respond quickly and with no obligation.

What is included in the price and what extra costs should I expect?

The base charter price typically includes: the yacht for the week and standard safety equipment. Additional costs usually include skipper fees (if you choose to sail with a skipper), final cleaning, marina fees, fuel and food. We always provide a full breakdown of costs before you book - no surprises.

When is the best time to book to get the best price?

The earlier you book, the better the price. The most popular yachts and dates get reserved as early as winter - especially July and August weeks. If you're planning a summer trip, January–March is the ideal time to book. Last minute deals do come up occasionally, but the choice is limited.

How does the booking and payment process work?

It's straightforward: you send an enquiry, we prepare a tailored offer, you confirm - and the yacht is yours. Payment is usually made in two instalments: a deposit at the time of booking and the remaining balance before departure. We accept all major payment methods.

Can I cancel my booking?

Cancellation terms depend on the specific boat owner or charter company - these are always clearly stated in the contract before any payment is made. We recommend considering travel insurance with cancellation cover for extra peace of mind.

Do I need experience or a license to charter a yacht?

It depends on whether you choose to sail with a skipper or without. If you opt for a crewed charter - no experience and no license is needed whatsoever. The skipper handles the boat; you simply enjoy the journey. If you'd like to sail independently (bare boat charter) a recognized sailing license and relevant experience will be required.

What is a skipper and do I need one?

A skipper is a professional sailor who sails with your group. They handle the boat, know the best hidden bays, take care of safety and often become an unforgettable part of the trip. Hiring a skipper is mandatory if you do not hold a recognized sailing license, but also for most first-time sailors it's the best choice - it means the holiday is relaxing and worry-free from the very first day.

What is the difference between a sailing yacht, a catamaran and a motor yacht?

A sailing yacht is the classic choice. The spirit of the sea, the wind, real sailing. Perfect for those who want authentic maritime experience. A catamaran is wider, more stable and more spacious. Great for families and those who value comfort above all. A motor yacht is faster, more comfortable and more luxurious. Ideal for those who want to cover more destinations in less time.

How many people can a yacht accommodate?

It very much depends on the yacht model. An average sailing yacht accommodates 6–8 people, a catamaran up to 10–12. Motor yachts also vary greatly in size. One important thing to know — the price is usually per yacht, not per person. So, the more people in your group, the lower the cost per head.

Are there storms in the Mediterranean?

Yes, they do happen, but rarely and usually briefly. The Mediterranean in summer is one of the calmest seas in the world. Stronger winds and waves are more common in spring and autumn. The peak sailing season - June through August - is generally the calmest and safest time to be on the water. Your skipper monitors forecasts continuously and always knows where to find shelter if needed.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

The skipper monitors weather forecasts at all times and plans the route accordingly. If worse weather is approaching - the boat stops in a safe marina or bay until it passes. This is completely normal sailing practice and simply part of the journey. More often than not, it means an extra evening in a charming harbor town - which is never a bad thing. 🙂

Is yacht charter safe?

Yes, yacht charter with an experienced skipper is safe. All yachts we offer meet safety requirements and are fully equipped with everything necessary: life jackets, life rafts and navigation equipment. The skipper is trained to handle any situation that may arise. The most important thing - listen to your skipper's guidance and enjoy the ride.

What does a typical day on a yacht look like?

You wake up surrounded by the sea - sometimes in a quiet hidden bay, sometimes in a charming harbor town. Breakfast on board, then sailing to the next anchorage, swimming, snorkeling, lunch. In the afternoon - a new destination, a stroll through narrow streets, dinner at a small restaurant on the waterfront. In the evening - back to the yacht, falling asleep to the sound of waves. Every day is different - and that is the best part of a yacht charter holiday.

Can we cook on board? Where do we sleep?

Yes, every yacht has a fully equipped galley with everything you need to prepare meals. You can cook on board or eat at waterfront restaurants ashore, most groups do a bit of both. Sleeping is in private cabins - each couple or individual gets their own cabin with a bed, storage and ventilation. Bathroom facilities are also on board.

Is there Wi-Fi on board?

Some yachts have Wi-Fi, others don't. In marinas you can usually connect to the local network. But honestly, most of our clients come back saying it was the best part of their holiday: finally switching off from the phone and simply being present. 🙂

Is yacht charter suitable for first-timers?

Absolutely, and for first-timers it often becomes the biggest surprise of all. With a skipper on board, there is nothing to learn in advance - you simply arrive and enjoy. Many of our clients stepped onto a yacht for the first time with butterflies in their stomach and came back already planning their next trip. Yacht charter is not just for seasoned sailors - it's simply a different, extraordinary way to discover the world.

Is it suitable for families with children?

Yes, sailing with children is wonderful. Kids typically fall in love with the boat from day one: swimming directly off the deck, fishing, exploring new harbors. We recommend a catamaran for families, it's more spacious and stable. It's important to discuss the children's ages and preferred route with us in advance so we can find the most suitable option.

Is it good for couples or a special occasion?

A yacht is one of the most romantic holiday experiences a couple can have. Your own little world, privacy, sunsets on deck, dinner in a tiny fishing village. Birthdays, anniversaries, honeymoons - a yacht charter gives any occasion a feeling that no hotel ever could. If you're planning something special - let us know in advance and we'll help make it truly unforgettable.

Is it cheaper to travel as a group?

Yes, significantly. The charter price is per yacht, not per person. So the more people in your group, the lower the cost for each individual. A group of 6–8 people often pays less per head than a standard hotel room in peak season - and gets all of this: a private yacht, a skipper, their own itinerary and an experience like no other.
